Disabled visitors

The Bay of Islands Vintage Railway welcomes disabled visitors and wheelchair-bound people of any age.

Please give us notice of your arrival if you wish to travel along with your fellow passengers, friends and family as we may have to re-arrange carriages.

Weka, our cycle car, can be accessed using a ramp from Kawakawa station only. Please note the ramp can only cope with lightweight wheelchairs, and also that Weka is an open car without a roof.

We also have a closed carriage, Pukeko, with a guard’s van. However, please note that at present the ramp for access through the sliding guard’s van door is not suitable for many of the heavier electric wheelchairs.

The platform at the station in Kawakawa is on one level, as are the toilets and café.

There is a long-drop toilet at Taumarere Station, but it could not be considered wheelchair friendly. We advise visitors to use the toilet at Kawakawa Station before departing where at present there is a toilet for wheelchair-users in the Ladies.
