July newsletter – The Mike Bradshaw Special

The Past

Over the past few years the volunteers of the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway Trust have achieved a great deal.

Only a few years ago, because every bridge still needed to be re-surveyed, trains only ran from the Railway Station through Kawakawa main street, to the first bridge out of town – a very short train ride!

The railway has now reached Lone Cow station - the half way point between Kawakawa and Opua. Originally built as a passing point from each direction c1988, and located in the Te Akeake area alongside the river.

Taumarere station, next to the longest curved wooden bridge in the Southern Hemisphere is where a beautiful picnic and barbeque area has been developed.

Trains are providing a link to join the gap in the Twin Coast Cycleway between Taumarere and Lone Cow at Te Akeake - see "What's Happening" section.

The Future

Over the past few years the volunteers of the trust have achieved a great deal.

We had our famous "Long Bridge" restored and re-piled, and thanks to a grant from the Provincial Growth Fund.

Rails have been re-instated to allow trains to join the gap in the Twin Coast Cycleway on the newest part of our track built between 1881- 1884.

Developments in updating our track happen all the time - come for a ride on our trains to see the latest!

The Experience

Visit us to enjoy a unique experience and a great family day out!

Visitors from all over the world enjoy our train rides through Kawakawa main street into the scenic Northland countryside.

Our knowledgeable Guards tell you about the History of the area, the role of the Railway in the development of North Island and New Zealand, and how we are helping to preserve the unique and rare flora and fauna of our Special part of the country.

We are equipped to assist disabled guests, wheelchair users, school groups and private parties. We even welcome pets! Please ring for further information.
