The rolling stock at the station has been in Kawakawa since the mid 80's. Due to the time that the railway was closed in January 2000, the carriages were left out in the weather where they did not fair very well.
On restarting the railway in 2006 we refurbished two coaches the "KINGFISHER" (our dinning car) and the "TUI" (which is the Observation Car) to get the railway up and running again. We have also rebuilt "WEKA", which is a completely open wagon and was very popular in the days before the railway closed down. It is a great way for visitors to travel on a railway excursion. We will keep you updated on our progress with the refurbishment and rebuilding of our carriages.
The building of our Carriage Shed meant that the carriages could be kept under cover and allowed to dry out and stop further deterioration. The students from NorthTec who are completing a Unit Standards Building Course in the carriage shed are in the process of rebuilding one of the coaches and the work can be seen in the photo of our carriages. We appreciate the assistance of local suppliers who have donated material to keep the students involved and learning new skills.
It was decided that we would rename our fleet with names of native New Zealand birds that could be seen from the train on its journey to Taumarere.
