HAPPENINGS AT
THE STATION

Sunday the 16th May
The ‘Puff n’ Pull Carnival

There will be Eight School Teams and Seven Community Teams taking part this year.

The day is made up of:

  1. The Trek the Track a sponsored walk completed by local schools. From Kawakawa United Rugby Field to the Star Hotel in Kawakawa. Buses leave Kawakawa for the Rugby Field from 8.30am.
  2. The Puff n’Pull will start at 10am and will continue till 12.00pm.
  3. There will be a demonstration of our new Velocipede (A Hand operated jigger) by two of our local MP’s Well worth see our representatives pulling together.
  4. At 1.30pm there will be Performances from Schools at Johnson Park in the rotunda. There will also be stalls and other activities to make it a real interesting day.

Come and join in the fun!

The new addition to our rolling stock is the open carriage ‘Clyde’ (photo in rolling stock) and will be of great interest when we travel through town.

Work is well under way with the refurbishment of our carriage being completed by the students from Polytec who are now under the guidance of our new tutor Varron. This is the third group of students to be involved with this building course and the results of the practical work are really impressive. We would welcome visitors to come in and see the progress being made.  With the success of the carpentry course we are hoping to increase the number of courses and skills of students.

We are also working on an up grade of the station area ‘The Kawakawa Railway Station Beautification Project’. A landscape design has been completed and we are in the process of organizing top soil and plants. Help is always required and if you would care to be involved we would be very pleased to see you.

The bridge 5 is now completed and also bridges 6, 7 and 8. There is a large number of sleepers to be replaced along the track but with the assistance of Community Service and our Team work is progressing. There is a lot of work to be done at Taumarere with the loop where we will be able to turn the engines to the front of the train, which will mean we are not pushing from the rear of the train.

Also work at the station at Taumarere has to be done to make it a picnic stop. It will be an interesting stop as it is right beside our ‘Long Bridge’ the longest curved wooden structure in the Southern hemisphere.

Well so much for now but will keep you posted on the Happenings at the Station’.

While visiting the station come and have a coffee at the “Platform Diner”, the café operating out of the railway station.
