Long Bridge – this information posted 1st September

x2017.01 looking forward to Opua                                           Long Bridge information

Please be careful at Taumarere Station, especially when crossing Long Bridge from Opua towards Kawakawa.  Trains may be approaching.  If you see an engine, STOP and WAIT. It only takes a few minutes for the engine to come onto the bridge, change direction and run along to the other end of carriages waiting at the platform at Taumarere, in order to go back to Kawakawa. Thank you.

Due to re-piling for the 33 piers/abutments of Long Bridge at Taumarere, Long Bridge had been shut as a building site, without public access. However, BOIVR were pleased that the bridge had been made safe for cyclists and walkers to use, and therefore the whole Twin Coast Cycle Trail from Opua to Horeke was opened over the Christmas holidays 2016-7.

At the present time, the state of the cycleway on Long Bridge is the responsibility of FNDC. We have been told that Signs are in place advising pedestrians and cyclists that the bridge is a construction site, but to remain on the walkway in order for the last 2 piers to be placed and complete the re-piling.
