The Past

Over the past few years the volunteers of the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway Trust have achieved a great deal.

Only a few years ago, because every bridge still needed to be re-surveyed, trains only ran from the Railway Station through Kawakawa main street, to the first bridge out of town – a very short train ride!

Over the years, thousands of hours of work have been carried out so that each bridge to be crossed could be certified for use and the track brought up to running standard.

The railway has now reached Taumarere, where a beautiful picnic and barbeque area has been developed. Many visitors have taken a picnic to enjoy the surroundings, and return on the next train - see News section.

The Future

We have just finished having our famous "Long Bridge" restored and re-piled, which will allow trains to run on to Opua, after the rails have been re-instated. We are now working towards realising our next major goal – to build a new station, cafe and visitors centre at Opua.
Please click here for more information.

The progress we are making will be regularly posted onto our News section (see below).
